Vision Explorer - Directions for use

Display recorded data

Following steps needed to retrieve recorded data:

  1. Start program
  2. Select the type of examination using the menu -> Examination dialog (default is ERG)
  3. Open datafile (unsing the File -> Open options)
  4. Peaks are measured automatically

Measurements (requires an A/D converter and a programmable amplifier)

Measurement data containing multiple responses are stored on a temporary file. The single resonses or the averaged potential can be stored using the menu -> File -> Save dialog. (The number of single measurements is currently limited to 100, will be configurable in a future release.) Averaging can be activated using the menu -> File -> Average command.

Measurements in PERG and VEP modes are starting just after activating the menu -> File -> New command. The measurement can be suspended by pressing any key on the keyboard. All single measurements can be displayed using the navigation keys (left arrow, right arrow Shift + left arrow and Shoft + right arrow). To continue the measurement from the current position press the "N" or "R" keys on the keyboard. Signals after this position will be overwitten by the program.

In ERG and EOG modes measurements are contolled by the operator. Stimulation and measurements can be started by pressing the "N" or "R" keys. ("N" -> next measurement, "R" -> repeat measurement)
After recording a sufficient amount of responses, the avarage of the recorded signals can be calculated using the menu -> File -> Average commands.

Manual measurements with the mouse

Pressing the right mouse button activates the magnetic cursor. Subsequent pressing of the right mouse button places the cursor on the next channel. Shift+right_mouse_button jumps to the previous channel. Jumping prior the first or after the last channel inactivates the magnetic cursor.

Minimum values of a signal can be marked by pressing the left mouse button, maximum values with Shift+leftt_mouse_button. To designale baseline of a signal press <Ctr>+leftt_mouse_button.
Order of measuring peaks: in case of measuring signals having two negative components, e.g., PERG, mark the positive peakk first.

Automatic latency and amplitude measurement can be activated by pressing the R - key.

Timer

The timer (bottom right) can be zeroed by pressing the 0 (zero) key.

Exporting measurement data to other applications

There are two possibilities to export curves to other applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop, etc.).

Export curves as an image:

a. Use the clipboard: Open a file, use "Edit -> Copy" (or press <Ctrl>+C), jump to, e.g., Word use "Edit -> Paste", resize image.

b. Generate a Metafile:  Open a file, "File -> Export -> Enhanced Metafile -> store file on disk. Jump to Word,  use Insert -> File -> Graphic, resize graphic.

Export curves as a text file:

Generates a Tab or comma separated text file.

Keyboard commands:

Key Function
0 Zero timer
F4 Change screen color (Black on white or white on black)
N Start the next measurement (n + 1)
R Repeat the measurement at the current position
left arrow go to the next measurement
(during data acquisition in VEP-PERG mode also stops measurement)
shift +
left arrow
go to the first measurement
right arrow go to the previous measurement
(during data acquisition in VEP-PERG mode also stops measurement)
shift +
right arrow
go to the last measurement
S stops measurement in VEP-PERG modes (press the keys "N" or "R" to continue measurement)
